Project Details

Dates: September 2016 – March 2017
Live Site:

Interaction Design, Front-End Build, Database Design & Admin, Back-End Development

Responsive, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Sass, ReactJS, Redux, Isomorphic / Universal, PHP, WordPress, REST API, NodeJS, Express, Nginx

Our Approach

After discussions with the Travelaer team we settled on building the site as a React.js single-page application, using WordPress as a CMS and serving content via its REST API. This gives their team the ability to easily add and update content & images with ease, in a familiar and, frankly, fantastic way using the standard, WordPress Admin interface.

The React.js powered front-end means that users are engaged in a native-app-like experience with near instant navigation and page loads. Using React Redux and Router means that we are able to also deliver an initial server-side render to the browser, making an isomorphic / universal site that’s fast-to-load on mobile devices and is just as friendly for social-sharing, SEO, bots and other devices with JavaScript disabled.

The modern and friendly feel, working across all devices, helps to reinforce Travelaer’s pursuit of being a state-of-the-art tech company focused on usability and design.

Why Sticky Pixel?

Sticky Pixel has collaborated closely with Travelaer in the past, working on two consulting projects for a large Airline IT Services company. In the first, we developed a library of reusable, front-end components and online style guide for a flagship consumer and business travel management app. In the second, we provided front-end development of a brand-new, enterprise-focused app that brought travel management right in to users’ MS Outlook.

This experience gave Travelaer the knowledge and confidence that we were able to produce high-quality results, reflecting their values.

Our Scope of Work

For this project, Travelaer already had a clear vision of the look and feel of the site and were able to provide us with comprehensive visual designs and content in Photoshop files. Our focus was on bringing those designs to life, delivering a beautiful, responsive and intuitive experience for users, including:

  • Initial site and state management architecture
  • Creation of bespoke, single-page, React.js powered site, using multiple reusable components and modules
  • Setup of WordPress using extensive custom fields to turn it in to a fully-fledged CMS
  • Customisation of the WordPress API using a mix of custom and built-in end points
  • Setup and customisation of Node.JS & Express server to provide the initial server-side render
  • Setup and hosting of the site on a Digital Ocean Linux / Nginx Server

"We are extremely happy with the approach and results that the team have delivered. Being a digital product company focused on flexibility, usability and customer experience, we needed a website that clearly demonstrated these values to our customers. They produced an accurate and relevant site, using the right tools and techniques for an engaging experience. This is our third collaboration with them and they did a fantastic job again, we will definitely continue to work with them on future projects."
